Singer's Digest Issue 3: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced, Amateur and PRO Singers will want to read this

Singer's Digest Issue 3: Advanced Intermediate AND Beginning Singers will want to read this

Amateur, hobby and PROFESSIONAL Singers will want to read this as well...

But wait!

Doesn't that imclude ALL Singer?

You bet. There is something that EVERY Singer needs to know.

You see, every Singer starts from the same place. There is a specific science to developing a singing voice at amateur, beginner, advanced and professional levels of Singing.

And do you want to know a SECRET about singing?

( PLEASE Tell ME! )

Thanks for asking!

Every Singer starts from the same place no matter how long they'e been Singing. There are certain vocal 'coordinations' or vocal skills that your voice needs to master in order to create the specific vocal sounds you wish to make.

If you want to reach a high note like your favourite Singer with the same richness and colour you need to learn all the moves, or vocal coordinations she has learned.

Which means you can't skip a step.

The number one reason ( or close to number one anyway ) Singers reach a plateau or perceived wall in the growth of their singing voice is because they skipped a step.

Let's now listen in on a typical 'discussion' between a Singer from Atlanta and a Toronto Voice Teacher ( me :). Let's 'join' them now.

Atlanta Singer Question: Are you saying that because I skipped a step I can't reach the high note?

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: Yes. You may have even skipped MANY steps.

Atlanta Singer Question: That would explain why I can't reach the high notes!

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: There is a lot more to singing than the high notes, but yes these are important too. And you can reach them ALL if you teach yourself all the vocal coordinations that are needed.

Atlanta Singer Question: I thought I just had to belt out the notes harder and that eventually I'd 'break through' and get all the vocal freedom and rich, free sounds like my favourite Singer.

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: How has that been working out for you so far?

Atlanta Singer Question: Not so well.

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: Do you think that will change?

Atlanta Singer Question: I hope so, so I've been working so hard at it.

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: Feels kind of like running really fast and hard east trying to catch a sunset that is setting in the west, doesn't it?

Atlanta Singer Question: Yes.

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: And if you're like most Singers, amateur, intermediate or PROFESSIONL maybe you've felt that way with many aspects of your singing voice.

Atlanta Singer Question: Like my vocal tone, my vibrato, breath control. The list goes on and on...

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: And it will continue to go on and on and on and on. Until you do something differently, do you see that?

Atlanta Singer Question: Ok, I get it. You've made my point. So what I've been doing doesn't work?

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: At least some of it doesn't work.

Your singing voice was designed to be used in a certain, specific way. When you use it as it was designed to be used and take the time to teach yourself how to use it you can do pretty much anything you want to with it.

Atlanta Singer Question: That is totally amazing! So if you follow the 'manual' perfectly and study over months and years you can have total vocal freedom?

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: Yes, the only problem is that your voice didn't come with a manual. And it takes time to learn and condition the 'moves'.

Atlanta Singer Question: But many of the Singers you work with have huge breakthroughs on a regular basis...

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: Yes. But only the ones who are willing to accept that no matter how long someone has been singing, everyone needs to start at the same place.

Which leads us back to our opening statement:

Every Singer, Amateur or PRO, Beginner or Advanced... starts from the same place

Atlanta Singer Question: So this means that I need to start from the very beginning, although I may already be performing at gigs and recording albums?

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: If you want to a free singing voice, which means you can achieve the exact sounds you hear in your head, you need to systematically build your voice. If you skip steps you know what you've been experiencing.

Atlanta Singer Question: When it seems we're so close but can never get there. I really, really want another way.

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: Ok. It doesn't mean that you throw away your years of Singing and start again. But it does kind of in a way mean that.

Atlanta Singer Question: I'd be learning a brand new method to Singing and I need to put all the layers in place one by one.

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: Exactly. And some layers will come to you more easily and quickly than others. If you've been using your voice incorrectly in some ways the new coordinations may take longer to condition.

Atlanta Singer Question: And some things will come easier for me. But I need ALL the steps.

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: Yes, and some beginners find that they learn parts of it faster than the pros. And the pros learn some things faster than the beginners.

Atlanta Singer Question: Like you with your vibrato.

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: YES! Almost everyone I work with develops their vibrato with much less work than it took me. And I still work on it a lot.

Atlanta Singer Question: But other aspects of your singing voice come much easier to you.

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: Like my head voice was always strong and developing it seemed easier that many other aspects.

Atlanta Singer Question: Ok, I get it. NOW I'm ready to learn and 'start over'. Even though it isn't likely starting over completely.

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: Yes. But it will only work when you temporarily at least forget all you've ever known about singing. It will only start to come together for you when you come into this humble like a new born babe.

Atlanta Singer Question: I'm ready. And thanks Paul for taking the time to teach me this. It seems like an essential attitude to have, learning to walk like I'm brand new.

Toronto Voice Teacher Answer: And you'll do great. I really look forward to hearing you break through and discover many new parts of your singing voice!

Which leads us to our lesson for today...but first...

Remember to enjoy your life process. Find the joy in Life by giving and being open to receive. Start by giving yourself permission to make mistakes and to not know everything. Give yourself the gift of patience. Starting with your singing voice. Be open, willing and ready to begin to learn anew.

And in doing so, we begin to discover the singing voice we've always dreamed of!

Homework: Make someone smile today. First with your voice and then without it.
