Piano Student : How did you start learning music?

East Toronto Piano Teacher : My parents started me out with the lady across the street when I was a child. This was fun and I liked it.

My Mother, however had to sit beside me to play or I'd run out the door to play with the other kids. First she made sure I did what I needed to do at the piano. Then I got to play outside.

In this way my Mother and Father played a very major role in my musical development as a child. They can take much credit.

My Father would for years drive me to the best music teachers regardless of where they were located. We lived in Etobicoke Toronto near the airport and he'd lovingly drive me to Oakville each week for lessons with a teacher who was becoming a concert pianist.

Then I commuted an hour each way to the Conservatory in downtown Toronto.

All of these music lessons changed me and very much shaped the composition I do today. They transformed me in many other ways too.

When you learn music you learn about yourself and about life. A great teacher teaches you on many many levels at once. My maturity developed in many ways very rapidly because I was exposed to really great teachers on a regular basis.
