Singer: How To CLEAN Up Your Singing Voice

June 17, 2009 by Paul Gasztold

Singers: How To CLEAN Up Your Singing Voice

Regardless of what style of music you sing, whether
it be rock, pop, r&b, gospel all the way to solo classical
singing, the vocal quality of your voice makes a tremendous
difference.

A lot of people ask me ' How do I hit the high notes without
straining? '. Or they say ' I have a low vocal range because
I was born that way'.

The truth of the matter is that the vocal ability you were born
with has little to do with the voice you have today.

Everyone has the same vocal ability. So, if this is true then
why do some Singers sound great when others don't?

The difference is that in each moment a Singer uses their
voice they are making choices. Choices on how to apply
their voices, choices on how to create tones. Choices on
how much to sing, or when to sing. Choices that are
purely emotional as well.

The choices we make every moment, every day every
week and every year build up like a massive snowball.

And depending on the vocal choices each Singer ( You )
has made along the way will determine what kind of 'snowball'
they end up with.

Pardon the seemingly cheesy analogy to the snowball...
my vocal students know that I'm infamous for these analogies.
But they say that the images work in their minds and help them
apply the concepts better.

So what does your vocal snowball look like today?

Is it a big clean, fluffy pure white vocal snowball that can hit
any vocal note with ease, clarity and perfection?

Or is it dirty, grey one with holes and rocks and twigs
sticking out of it?

FACT...

Depending ONLY on the choices you make each
moment, and are making now, your voice will resemble
one of these 'snowballs'.

It can be perfect and free...and becoming more so.
Or very limited...and getting more so.

Do you get the picture?

KNOW THIS...

The vocal choices we make now, in how we use our voice,
are limited ONLY by the experiences we've had.

Many Singers keep doing the same thing over again and won't
find someone to help them. Or they take a few lessons and think
that is all they need to know.

------------------------------------
Personal side note:

For me I needed a LOT of lessons. Same for most people.
A singer told me recently, 'everyone needs to put their bacon on
the table' meaning everyone who wants the result needs cough up
the dough for lessons and do the work.

I still take lessons today ( from someone who charges $300 an
hour ) because I want my listeners and students to get the very
best. And no one knows everything. Not me or whoever I study
with. )
------------------------------------

The fact is if you get a better vocal experience of singing you will
have more choices. Better choices that help your voice improve
and go where you want it to be tomorrow.

Because either we work WITH our voices or we work AGAINST
our voices.

IF we are making airy, breathy raspy or strained tones
today we will only get more of the same tomorrow. Even MORE
raspy, breathy and strained.

However, IF we sing in a clear, pristine, correct way today we will
get an improved voice tomorrow.

And if we keep making great vocal choices our singing voice
WILL snowball into singing voice we have ALWAYS wanted.

Today as I build my voice ( I don't believe in warmups, but
instead tools and techniques that build my voice up to new levels
each day ) I will make sure that I apply it correctly.

This means creating pure, correct tones without trying to get
something out of my voice it isn't ready to give me. I give it the
time to build up each day and listen to what it needs.

My voice will get what it needs because I know that when I work
WITH my voice and make the best choices then I can ask it to do
ANYTHING I want it do.

It is just a matter of making the best choices each moment, each day
each week and each year.

SO ASK YOURSELF...

What does YOUR vocal snowball look like today?

AND

How do you want it to look tomorrow???

Your mission this week should you accept it:

1) Get some new vocal experiences so you can make
the best vocal choices for yourself.

2) Don't push your voice when building it each day. Give
it what it needs and don't force it to do what it isn't ready for

3) Build your voice only with pure, clean tones. ( If you
can't then you need to learn how to maintain vocal chord
closure ).

4) Know that reading about it can only point you in the right
direction but will never give you the experience you need...
get in front of someone who can help you.

And above all..

REMEMBER... that YOU can have ANY voice you want
regardless of where you've come from. Some teachers
don't agree, but I see it again and again. It is all about
your choices.

Thanks for reading today.

Keep singing,
